Research and Audit
Mr Braithwaite works in two of the Country's Leading Teaching Hospitals where he helps to educate Medical Students and Postgraduates. Along with his colleagues, he is involved in several research projects highlighted below: Endovascular Aneurysm Repair 1. The Medical Research Councils EVAR I and II Studies 2. The Nottingham Frontier Study 3. REVAR - A randomised study of Open versus Endovascular Repair of Ruptured AAA 4. 5. The role of laparoscopic aortic surgery combined with endovascular surgery. Varicose Veins 1. A randomised trial of TRIVEX versus conventional avulsions during varicose vein surgery. 2. A randomised trial of VNUS versus conventional surgery for recurrent varicose veins. Approved by BUPA and PPP. - 3. Gonadal vein reflux and pelvic congestion syndrome 4. Patterns of recurrent varicose veins - PRESENTED AT THE VENOUS FORUM OF THE ROYAL SOCIETY OF MEDICINE 5. The role of MRI in deep vein thrombosis 6. B wave duplex ultrasound and deep vein reflux disease. 7. A randomised trial of compression hosiery after varicose vein surgery. 8. Comparison of Endovenous laser therapy, VNUS and Varicofoam Blood Transfusion requirements in vascular surgery 1. An audit of blood transfusion requirements in arterial surgery. Following Mr Braithwaite's research in co-operation with the QMC blood transfusion committee, all patients who need Aortic Aneurysm Surgery at QMC now have any blood lost during their operation cleaned and given back (cell salvage). This technique is approved by some of Jehovah's Witnesses. BOTOX Mr Braithwaite is one of the investigators in a multi-national study of BOTOX treatment for axillary hyperhidrosis. New Drugs for Thrombolysis in acute arterial occlusion Mr Braithwaite's research into Thrombolysis (chemical clearing of blocked blood vessels) has led to his involvement in a large study on a new drug for thrombolysis.
