Information for patients who have decided to have Botox for Axillary Hyperhidrosis
If you have seen Mr Braithwaite and decided to have BOTOX treatment for axillary hyperhidrosis then he will arrange an appointment for you. What do I need to do before I come for treatment? Before treatment, it will be necessary to remove the hair in your armpit by shaving or by using hair removing cream. Do not use any deodorants or antiperspirants for 24 hours before treatment. What will happen when I have BOTOX? Mr Braithwaite will ask you to lie on a couch or bed and will then 'paint' some iodine onto your armpit. When this has dried, he will sprinkle some powder onto the armpit. After a while the powder will turn blue where you sweat the most. Mr Braithwaite will mark the area that is affected and will then clean the skin. He will, using a fine needle, inject the BOTOX into the skin of the affected area. This is slightly uncomfortable. The treatment is then completed and you may then go home. What should I wear? Iodine stains clothes. It is best to wear an old shirt to go home in so that your best clothes are not ruined. How do I Know if BOTOX has worked? Within a few days, if you respond to the treatment, you should notice a difference. How long does it last? After 6 to 9 months, new nerves grow and you may start to sweat again. If that happens the treatment can be repeated. Research has shown that about 30% of people treated with BOTOX only need one session. About 50% require 2 treatments and 15% need 3 sessions. Do I have to come back to clinic? BOTOX for hyperhidrosis is a new technique so Mr Braithwaite will ask you to come back so that he can check the results of treatment. Are there any side effects? Some people may have an immune response to the proteins in the BOTOX. If this happens, you may get some 'flu-like' symptoms. About 5% of people may notice increased sweating in other areas, this is known as compensatory hyperhidrosis.
